Twisted Ties of Love

Chapter 66

Chapter 66

Izabella was like a broken tape recorder, talking incoherently, perhaps even she didn't know what she was saying. Her mind was a mess, but her heart was even more chaotic.

Her words were like a few stones thrown into Brett's calm heart, stirring up ripples only to return to calm again in no time.

Brett's heart ached for some unknown reason, as he stared at Izabella, but Kaley's image appeared in his mind instead.

What was Izabella to him? Why would he be afraid of those hypothetical situations she raised?

Today was a sunny day, with bright sunlight shining through the windows, filling the entire ward with a cozy warmth. Even the gloominess in the corners seemed to have been swept away. Yet, despite the warmth, Brett broke out in a cold sweat.

Suddenly standing up, he grabbed Izabella's thin chin and mocked, "Trying to get me to let you go by playing the pity card? I don't know if your assumptions will come true, but you did something you shouldn't have. You think a few words can erase your mistakes?"

Izabella was stunned for a second, then laughed, "You figured it out?"

Izabella, half of her face in shadow, looked somewhat elusive as she faced the light.

Just as he thought! Brett felt relieved to have his suspicions confirmed. He wanted to teach her a lesson, but seeing her injured like a patched-up doll that seemed like it could fall apart with a single pull, he couldn't do it.

"Let's go."

Brett's lack of anger caught Izabella off guard. She nodded, picking up the bag of medicines - five bottles rattling inside.

"What are you carrying?"

Hospital stuff, of course, Brett obviously knew but asked anyway.

"Medicine. I ran out of stomach meds, and some supplements..."

Taking supplements too - just how weak had Izabella become? Brett remembered that she used to hate the taste of bitter medicine, preferring injections over taking pills. But now she had bought so many, apparently reaching a point of no choice.

Izabella's knee was injured, causing pain as she walked. She gritted her teeth and tried to maintain her composure, but only took a few steps before Brett lifted her up.

Impatient, Brett seemed annoyed by how slow she was walking.

The car was parked at the hospital entrance. Brett placed Izabella in the passenger seat, closed the door and walked to the driver's side.

Izabella buckled her seatbelt, leaned against the window and lowered her head.

Time hadn't been unkind to her looks. From their first encounter six years ago until now, all time had done was wash away her childishness, shaping her into a unique, attractive woman. Even sitting quietly made her pleasing to the eye.

Izabella stared out the window, while Brett lit a cigarette single-handedly. Driving and smoking wasn't a good habit.

She smelled the smoke and wanted to remind him, but before she could speak, he bit on the cigarette and said, "If it bothers you, hold your breath."

Brett wasn’t afraid of causing an accident. He smoked to specifically make Izabella uncomfortable, knowing that she hated the smell.

She swallowed her words, letting the cold breeze in through the cracked window instead.

She wore a hospital gown - poor material and one size too big. It billowed with every gust of wind, making her look even tinier, like a person about to be blown away.

All of a sudden, Brett found this sight of Izabella irritating. He took two puffs of his cigarette before putting it out in frustration.

At that moment, a family of three passed by the window. A tall, strong man had his child on his shoulders, while the woman smiled warmly at the playful father and child.

Izabella stared at the scene, her gaze lingering even after the car had driven past.

Brett saw it too, but what caught his attention was the kid, reminding him of the thought he'd had previously about getting Izabella pregnant. Original content from NôvelDrama.Org.

She hadn't used any contraception after being discharged from the hospital, chances were she might already be carrying his child.

Once this idea took hold, it quickly grew on him. He couldn't help but feel excited about the prospect of the child that would be born from Izabella.
