Lydia resembled Lena, and Mom and Noel transferred their love for Lena to Lydia.
Lydia had anemia and was a rare RH–negative blood type.

Noel had been distant with me.
But every time I donated blood, they would buy me milk, bread, and even chocolate.
Eventually, as I donated blood more frequently, it became routine. They started to see it as something I was supposed to do, even believing I was atoning for my sin.
In my sophomore year, when Lydia needed blood, I was hit by a car on my way to the hospital. I limped into the hospital, arriving half an hour late.
As soon as I arrived, Mom lashed out at me, hitting and kicking.
