Chapter 234 Fireflies
If it wasn't a hallucination, how could she see Brendon here?
The man was dressed in black clothes and pants, tall and handsome, followed by a group of righteous police officers.
Ranita's joy surged like a tsunami.
She widened her eyes, afraid that if she blinked, the person in front of her would disappear. She hoarsely shouted, "Brendon... is it you?"
"It's me! It's me!" Brendon rushed over and hugged her tightly.
The woman curled up on the crude bed seemed to be tortured to the point where only bones were left.
Brendon's eyes turned red as he suppressed his raging anger and whispered to comfort her, "Ranita, don't be afraid! We found you!" Property of Nô)(velDr(a)ma.Org.
Could it really be Brendon?!
Ranita instinctively grabbed his clothes with one hand. The grievances surged from her chest as she buried herself in Brendon's arms and sobbed with gritted teeth.
"Brendon... why did you come so late..."
"I'm sorry! It was my fault! I made you suffer!" Brendon's warm palm touched her face. He looked at Ranita's pale face like paper and said softly, "Let's go home!"
Ranita murmured an "okay" while feeling dizzy.
"Mr. Stuart, we have already controlled the people outside. Here is the key to unlock Miss Bowman," said a female police officer who came over holding a small key.
Only then did Brendon notice that there was an iron chain tied around Ranita's right ankle.
Unable to suppress his anger any longer, he rushed out immediately. Soon after came Turner's heart-wrenching screams along with sounds of fighting between him and the police officers outside.
But Ranita didn't feel any sympathy for Turner whatsoever.
If they hadn't found her here today… Ranita couldn't imagine what would have happened next...
Maybe as Turner had said before - she would've been locked up here like a dog for life; tortured by him; enslaved by him; living worse than death itself...
Just thinking about it gave Ranita chills all over her body...
"Ranita!" Just then Steve hurriedly walked over carrying his medical kit.
Once again caught off guard, Ranita asked, "Dr. Pearson, you're also here?"
"I was worried about you so I came." After pausing for a moment, Steve covered Ranita's body with a blanket, "Don't move, I'll do some basic checks."
After finishing checking, Ranita breathed out relief when Steve told her, "You're just dehydrated, and malnourished but everything else seems fine. You're very lucky."
Turner's arms were broken, and he couldn't do anything to her. This was truly a blessing in disguise.
Ranita mechanically cooperated with the police to make a simple record. Brendon wrapped her in a blanket and carried her on his back because they couldn't get the car close enough. It was pitch black outside, and the people beside them were using flashlights.
Ranita lay on Brendon's back, her legs weak, her heart in turmoil, and her head confused. "Brendon... how did you find me?"
"Your throat hurts. Don't talk," Ranita hadn't drunk much water, so she sounded hoarse and rough. She pursed her lips and made an affirmative sound.
Brendon had broad shoulders that made Ranita feel safe even though they were swaying as he walked. Suddenly someone shouted out, "Fireflies!"
Brendon stopped walking and turned his head to ask Ranita, "Did you see it?"
Ranita saw it for the first time - so many fireflies! In the quiet darkness of night sky like stars falling from heaven - flashing lights that were incredibly beautiful.
She rubbed against Brendon's shoulder with excitement, "It's really beautiful." Because she was watching it with Brendon, it seemed more beautiful than any other time before this moment.
