The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan)

Chapter 72

Chapter 72

Ronan and Barney had a little chit-chat downstairs.

As he was about to head upstairs, he accidentally bumped into Cordelia's bag.

Cordelia's bag had slid to the edge of the table, and with Ronan's touch, books fell onto the floor. As he

bent down to pick them up, a book opened to the title page, on which was written: "May your dreams

come true soon, from Jamie."

Ronan's face fell instantly. Jamie's handwriting was elegant. The note even included a date and

address. The date was last Saturday, and the address was Pages & Prose. From NôvelDrama.Org.

Cordelia had already read over a hundred pages of this book, and she'd folded a corner where she'd

stopped reading.

Over two days, she'd read over a hundred pages. She sure is a fast reader!

There was also a notebook on financial cost management, also from Jamie, filled with dense notes.

Another textbook, bought from Pages & Prose, bore the store's stamp.

So, where had Cordelia been those few days she was mad at him and didn’t come home?

Ronan put the books back with a glum face and went upstairs.

So Cordelia's resignation wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. He knew it. She wasn't impulsive.

She was thoughtful.

"You're up?" Cordelia asked when she saw him, her voice indifferent, but her eyes were full of lingering

affection, like a girl in love.

"Who's got your heart racing, huh?" Ronan asked, leaning back on the couch, closing his eyes.

"Definitely not you!" Cordelia retorted with a playful tone of annoyance.

"I know it's not me!" Ronan replied casually, "I'm just a contract husband, I don't care."

His words made Cordelia's heart sink a little.

"As long as you know! Where am I supposed to sleep tonight?" Cordelia glanced at him, he was lying

on the couch, his mature composure and steadfastness were irresistible.

"If you're here, you sleep in the bedroom. You planning to sleep with another man?" Ronan's tone was

light, with a hint of cold sarcasm.

Cordelia merely grunted in response.

She knew that if she slept in the bedroom, she wouldn't get a good night's sleep. Sure enough, after

their intimacy, her body bore scratch marks. She complained a bit petulantly, "You hurt me."

"You think being intimate with someone else wouldn't hurt?" Ronan retorted coldly.

Cordelia remembered his 'contract marriage' comment earlier. Even though they'd made up, she still

believed Deanna's instigation. Cordelia still had some doubts. In a somewhat spiteful tone, she said,

"My future husband."

"Oh? Really? Who's your future husband?" Ronan started to laugh, a laugh so cold it sent chills down

Cordelia's spine.

Ronan's demeanor was slightly off, but Cordelia thought he was perfectly normal when he was

downstairs earlier. It was impossible for his mood to change in such a short amount of time. If it did, his

mood swings would be too frequent.

Cordelia figured she was just overthinking.

"I'm going to sleep, no more chitchat." She said, turning over to sleep.

The next day, Cordelia went downstairs and found her bag neatly arranged by Janice. She was a bit

surprised and specifically asked Janice, "Janice, did you touch anything in my bag?"

Janice responded, "Ma'am, your bag was about to fall off the table. If I hadn't tidied it up, how could it

possibly be sitting neatly on the table?"

Knowing her bag was as it was the night before, Cordelia was relieved.

She wasn't aware that Ronan had been watching her every move.

Once in the car, Cordelia held her canvas bag tightly.

While waiting at a red light, Ronan casually glanced at her and jokingly asked, "What's in your canvas

bag? Afraid I'll steal it?"

"Treasure. Of course, I'm afraid you'll snatch it!" Cordelia answered nonchalantly.

It indeed was a treasure!

Ronan wished he could smash that precious treasure to pieces!
