Chapter 1999
"Don't get ahead of yourself! Hertha snapped, her gaze darting away, refusing to acknowledge the claim.
Alaric grabbed her hand, lifting it up, "Look at this, what's shining on your finger? A ring, an engagement ring! You've already put it on, and now you wanna back out?"
"Fine, I'll give it back to you, happy now?" Hertha reached for the ring, determined to remove it.
She had only accepted Alaric's proposal to prevent a certain woman from causing a scene and ruining Spencer's wedding.
It was a desperate move. Did Alaric really think there was anything more to it?
Seeing Hertha actually trying to remove the ring, Alaric quickly clasped her other hand to stop her.
"Who backs out of an engagement just like that? Hertha, we haven't even left this hotel. Aren't you worried that woman might be lurking around, ready to film this and cause drama at Spencer's wedding?"
Alaric held onto Hertha's struggling hand, his words also a plea for her to reconsider.
Of course, he knew Hertha had accepted his proposal to protect Spencer's wedding.
He wasn't exactly threatening her; he just didn't want her to make a rash decision that could hurt them both.
Sure enough, his words hit home. Hertha stopped struggling, her breaths heavy. "Let go of me, I won't take the ring off."
Alaric obediently released her hand.
The moment she was free, Hertha stormed off, wanting nothing to do with Alaric.
Alaric followed, "My car's over there. Let me give you a ride home."
"I don't want to go anywhere with you!" Hertha retorted.
"Why not?" Alaric asked.
"Why should I? To thank you? Alaric, don't think I don't know what you're up to. Forget about it; I'm not falling for your tricks again!" Hertha snapped, her gaze fierce.
Alaric was like a predator, as if he couldn't survive without a woman by his side.
She wasn't going to be fooled again!
Hearing her mention "tricks," Alaric paused, then chuckled. "So, that's what you think. Don't worry, whenever you're ready, I'm here."
"Alaric!" Hertha was seething with anger.
How could he remain so nonchalant when she was this close to blowing a gasket?
"Alright, alright, I'll stop. Don't be mad," Alaric said, trying to soothe the tension.
"My point was, I was hoping you'd treat me to dinner tonight, you misunderstood," Alaric clarified.
Hertha, taking things more seriously now, was not in the mood for jokes, so Alaric didn't push further.
"Why should I treat you to dinner?" Hertha was perplexed.

Alaric explained, his tone light but his words hitting close to home.
He knew exactly what Hertha was thinking, reaching right into her heart.
As long as he played on her guilt, she wouldn't be able to refuse a simple dinner with him.

the one he's thanking, not me," Hertha said, rolling her eyes, clearly done with the conversation.
