Upon noticing an improvement in their complexion and demeanor after drinking the water, Janet spoke in a serious tone, saying, "Please accept my sincerest condolences, Vivi's father and mother."
The two elders glanced at Janet with a tinge of fear in their eyes and quickly lowered their heads without giving her a response.
Janet didn't mind the lack of a response, and continued to address the couple in a calm and gentle manner, "Regardless of whether you believe me or not, I want to assure you that I had nothing to do with Vivi's death. I'm completely willing to cooperate with the authority's investigation. If there's anything I can do to assist you, I gladly will, to the best of my ability."
The elders listened silently to Janet's words, gently wiping the tears that streamed down their faces. It was clear that the pain of losing their daughter was still quite overwhelming.
After a while, the old man spoke in a hoarse voice, saying, "We are very old. No matter how much compensation we receive, we won't be able to take it with us to the grave. We endured the long journey here with our aged bodies not for anything else but to uncover the truth about how our daughter died and to seek justice on her behalf."
As soon as the old man finished his statement, the brawny men on the other side of the room began grumbling in dissatisfaction.
They glared at the old man with venomous eyes, clearly unhappy with his statement about compensation not being a priority for him.
Several bodyguards firmly restrained the agitated men, forcing them to reluctantly fall silent.
Janet didn't pay attention to the commotion and instead focused her attention on the old man, empathizing deeply with his sorrow.
She nodded solemnly and responded, "I understand. I also want to know the truth about Vivi's car accident. I trust that the police will provide you with all the answers you seek."
The old lady wiped away her tears, her voice trembling with grief as she spoke. "Vivi was our only precious daughter, and we never expected that she would... she would leave us like this..."
Before she could conclude her statement, the old lady's sobs grew so intense that she nearly fainted. The old man quickly took a hold of her hand, comforting her with gentle pats on the back. After a while, the elderly woman regained a bit of her composure, although tears continued to stream uncontrollably down her face.
Janet was deeply touched as she observed the elderly couple's anguished demeanor, quite convinced that they had indeed not come for money. "Don't worry," she said, "I am confident that justice will be served. If there was any foul play involved, anyone responsible for it will be held accountable." Out of nowhere, Suzanne chimed in, "Yes, you can rest assured of that. Despite the conflicts that Ms. White had with Vivi, I believe that she never would've caused her any harm."
The atmosphere in the room immediately became silent for a brief moment. Janet cast a glance at Suzanne and said with a subtle smile, "Ms. Duncan is right. I can assure you that I had nothing to do with it. Speaking of which, I recall the day that Ms. Duncan forced Vivi to sign the termination
agreement for their collaboration. Vivi kept begging you to give her another chance, and seemed quite reluctant to sign it. Could we consider that situation as a conflict?"
Suzanne responded with an awkward smile and opted to remain silent, sporting a sulky look on her face.
Janet withdrew her stern gaze and softened her expression once more as she turned to the elderly couple. "Where are you staying in Barnes?" she enquired kindly.
The pair exchanged a glance, then shook their heads. The old man replied, "We came in a hurry and didn't have time to plan for accommodation. We also don't know if the hotels in Barnes are expensive..."
The old lady wiped away her tears and said, "Regardless of where we stay, the most important thing is that we will seek justice for my daughter. Ms.... Ms. White, you don't have to worry about our meals or accommodation. Please, just help us find the murderer!"
Janet nodded firmly. "You have my word. I'll do everything in my power to bring the culprit to book!"
The couple nodded in agreement, grateful for Janet's kindness. Janet then, with a gentle smile, bent down to the elderly pair and said in a heartfelt tone, "Please stay with me as we try to get to the bottom of it. I'll have someone take care of your meals and accommodation."
