Chapter 17. Had an Easy Way Out

Noah POV

When the car turned round the block, and we were well out of sight of Britney’s apartment, I did what I had been itching to do earlier.

I took my phone out and called Brent, a private investigator, in my employ.

He works for me independently but not for the company, and over the years, we developed mutual trust that paved the way to becoming good friends.

He was one of my people now, not just an employee. He owns one of the top surveillance and investigative agencies in the country.

“Morning, boss. What’s with the early call?” He said flippantly when he picked up.

“Stop making me feel like a stuck–up CEO,” I told him succinctly, which earned a low laugh from him.

“Okay. Let’s cut to the chase and get it on. What do you want me to do?” He asked, sounding all business–like as usual.

His voice lacked the carefree tone from earlier and was now all

seriousness.

Suddenly, I began to hesitate. I don’t know how to begin.

Asking Brent’s help would open up a can of worms I had painstakingly tucked in the shadows. Besides, I recoiled at the prospect of having him tease me nonstop.

But the other option was a deal breaker for me. Hence, I have no

choice if i want to know the truth and assuage this curiosity that feeds my gun

“Cat got your tongue?” Brent joked in my silence before chuckling, not knowing the inner turmoil assailing me

By this time, I was able to collect my bearings, having decided on what to do.

“This is important.” I barked, earning another chuckle from the

man.

“You wouldn’t call me if it isn’t.” Comes the quick reply.

“Shut up. I need your help.” I said, laughing awkwardly.

“I know you do.”

“How about meeting me in…” I checked my Grandmaster Chime Patek Philippe watch in white gold.

an hour at Blue Canyon?” I mentioned the name of the nearest country club where we enjoyed VIP memberships.

“Right on. You got yourself a date.” He kidded and dropped the line.

I pressed the end button and put my phone away before meeting my driver’s eyes in the rearview mirror.

“You heard it. We’re going to the Blue Canyon.” I told him.

He nodded before making another left turn.

When we arrived at the country club, Brent’s car was already idle at the parking slot reserved for every VIP member.

I opened the car door to get out. At the same time, Brent opened his car door and got out.

We nodded at each other and walked together toward the entrance to the Club.

We chose a private room for this rendezvous.

For a while, we started catching up and chatted about personal stuff. When our orders arrived, we started getting down to This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.

business.

It was no secret that I was married before, but the nature of our divorce was one I never divulged in public. Peopspeculated. Briana’s cheating was something I could not discuss with anyone because the betrayal was too deep

She said she loved me but was having an affair behind my back..

My hands clenched in reflex at the memory.

weren’t for Uncle Matt, I wouldn’t know that my wife had been cuckolding me. He had her followed, and the pictures he showed me leave nothing to the imagination. There were hotel assignations, secret meetings in another town, arguments, etc.

But what made me loathe her was the result of the police investigation following the death of my parents. All the evidence pointed to her as the mastermind

That day of our third anniversary, Briana left work early to meet her lover. That gave her the perfect excuse for being excluded in the accident that took my parents‘ lives and left me in a coma

“Hey, you are zoning out. Do you have any problems?” Concern

laced Brent’s voice.

I shook my head and sighed.

Here goes nothing.

“Can you check the airline manifest for arriving passengers at the Redwood City International Airport? I want to know if a certain Briana Johnson arrived today.”

“Your ex–wife?” Brent looked stunned. She used to be a taboo topic

for me.

I nodded my head slowly to confirm.

“I saw someone at the airport bearing a resemblance to her, and I wanted to be sure,” I told him.

“What for? Are you still in love with her? What about Britney?”

I gritted my jaw hearing the questions Brent threw at me, and I could not help snorting at the very idea.

“Let’s just say I wanted to feed my curiosity,” I said after sipping from my coffee cup.

Brent stared at me like he wanted to assess the lucidity of my thought process.

“I realized I had given her an easy way out. She shouldn’t have it easy. Briana Johnson deserves to suffer for what she has put me through.”
