“Serenity is so lucky to have Jackson. I didn’t expect to see Serenity in a wedding dress today. Are they getting married…” Lynette’s voice trailed off as she spoke. She realized Lucas was not listening to her at all. He was just staring blankly in the direction where Serenity and Jackson had left earlier.
“W–What is he looking at?” Lynette felt the uneasiness in her heart begin to grow.
Serenity and Jackson went outside and chose a restaurant randomly. They had rushed over after getting the news, so Serenity had not eaten lunch. Even so, she did not feel hungry.
“Sorry for keeping you here. We haven’t even had lunch, Serenity apologized. She looked at the meal in front of her but did not start eating
“What’s there to be sorry for? I’ll always be there for you when something this big happens,” Jackson soothed. Glancing at her untouched meal, he urged, “Even if you don’t feel hungry, eat something. If you’ll be at your Granny’s wake for the next three days, you must keep your strength up.”
Jackson was right. Serenity knew she really needed to eat. She had to keep her strength up to watch over Granny for the next three days.
Serenity began eating one bite at a time, but the food tasted like nothing and felt like wax in her mouth.
“Is it terrible? Why don’t I take you to another place?” Jackson suggested.
“No, it’s fine. It would be the same everywhere,” Serenity rejected. As if completing a task, she hurriedly finished her meal.
Jackson quietly ate with Serenity. Once they were done, he paid for the meal.
Jackson did not say anything until they walked out of the restaurant, and he asked, “You don’t like seeing your cousin and Lucas together?”
Serenity was momentarily stunned by his sudden question. “Why do you ask?”
“You didn’t seem to like it when Lynette held Lucas arm,” Jackson said while studying her reaction.
It took Serenity a while to realize what Jackson was talking about.
“It’s not like that. I just thought Lynette was still married, so it would have been a little inappropriate for her to hold Lucas so intimately, but Lynette is already divorced, so it’s okay.”
