The treatments over the past few years had worked.
Skylar had never heard Joe mention any allergies, but thinking back to when they were married, she realized they never really ate nuts when they had meals together.
Now that she had thought about it, she remembered that she was the only one who had ever
eaten the nuts at home.
“He scared me! I’ve clearly watched too many TV shows, and I thought someone had drugged him. It’s my fault. If I had known it was just an allergic reaction, I would’ve gotten someone to
fetch the medicine sooner.” Lizzie looked a bit embarrassed.
Because of how Lizzie had described the situation, Rowan had rushed over, and Skylar had worried for half the night.
As Joe lay on the bed, Howard quickly and expertly prepared and administered the injection for his allergic reaction.
Skylar and the others wait outside.
Paul stifled a yawn and said, “I admit, I’ve been thinking up some conspiracy theories myself. Honestly, I was surprised they didn’t pull anything tonight. Something just feels off. But when I really think about it, they need Joe to keep up appearances.”
“They want more than just appearances. Tonight’s event was their way of showing all the guests that their relationship with Joe remains as strong as ever. And so, everyone should treat them
accordingly.” Lizzie snorted.
After making her deal with Joe, Lizzie learned a bit more about the Martin family dynamics. She had heard some rumors before, but now that she had all the pieces, it was clear what was going on. It was similar to her own family.
Outsiders envied them for being part of wealthy families, but they had no idea about the struggles they had to endure behind closed doors.
Skylar looked at two of them and asked, “Was there anything strange at the banquet tonight?”
“Strange?” Lizzie raised an eyebrow. “The strangest thing was Joe passing out from a nut allergy.”
Paul couldn’t help but twitch at her words. “You’re pretty bold, poking fun at Mr. Martin like that.”
“I’m just stating facts, not mocking him.” Lizzie shrugged.
She knew that he wouldn’t care about a few jokes as long as she didn’t steal Skylar away from Joe.
Paul turned to Skylar. “If you’re talking about strange things, Mr. Claudio was acting odd. After Mr. Martin went to the guest room to rest, Mr. Claudio suddenly claimed he was drunk
and went upstairs too.
“Normally, he loves being in the spotlight. If Mr. Martin isn’t around, Mr. Claudio always seizes the chance to show off, but tonight he didn’t.”
“Could it be that they deliberately had the chef put crushed nuts in the food?” Lizzie speculated.
Paul nodded thoughtfully. “That’s possible. They wouldn’t dare do anything openly, but they could’ve pulled some petty, nasty stunt behind the scenes.”
Skylar lowered her gaze in thought.
A few hours ago, Claudio called her, and his tone was even more arrogant than the last time. The Martin family members were all a handful.
“What are you thinking about, Mrs. Martin? Do you suspect Mr. Claudio of stirring things up behind the scenes?” Paul asked.
Lizzie also turned her attention to Skylar. “You’re not still worried about Mr. Martin, are you? Dr. Grey is treating him, and he will be fine.”
She had to admit that Joe was quite fortunate.
He had someone like Skylar by his side, someone he truly trusted.
Skylar glanced at the two of them. “Claudio called me a few hours ago.”
“He called you? What did he want?” Paul looked surprised.
Lizzie had a sudden thought. “Could it be that he’s got his eye on you? Maybe he thinks Joe’s abandoned you, and now he’s swooping in?”
Paul’s face darkened with anger. “That guy’s got some nerve.”
If Joe had discovered this, Claudio wouldn’t have had a good time anytime soon.
Before Skylar could respond, Rowan came out of the bathroom, having overheard most of the
conversation.
He scoffed. “Claudio is a piece of work. I’ve heard from some friends that he’s been running his mouth, saying Joe’s woman will soon be his. The nerve of that guy.”
“Ridiculous! What a piece of –” Paul crushed under his breath.
Rowan walked over to Skylar and looked at her. If he calls you again, just tell him to get lost.”
Skylar nodded. “I will.”
After thinking for a moment, she turned to Paul and said, “Look into Claudio. Something’s not
