Chapter 458
Chapter 458
Misunderstandings Between Us
But Jack insisted, "No, how will I know about your condition if I don't come in?"
The corners of Rachel's mouth twitched. She pointed her fingers to the piece of paper that was stuck on the wall. "Can't you see? This clearly says men aren't allowed to enter!"
"Okay then," he said and let out a defeated sigh. But before he went to sit down, he looked at Rachel and pleaded, "If anything happens, call me immediately, okay?"
Without giving him an answer, she shut the door.
She shook her head in annoyance once she was in.
Sitting alone in the chair, Jack checked the time on his watch from time to time. His eyes were glued to the door. Seeing it was still tightly closed, his began to panic. 'It has been twenty minutes since she went in. Why hasn't she come out yet?' he wondered. Thinking something horrible had happened, he started pacing back and forth.
The man who sat beside him happily went to his wife. Embracing her, he said, "How did it get over so fast? It only took you five minutes!" Listening to their conversation, Jack's worry intensified. 'How come it took her only five minutes? Why has Rachel been inside for twenty minutes?'
The more Jack thought about it, the more anxious he became. He couldn't wait any longer. Walking towards the consulting room, he was about to twist the doorknob. On seeing this, a nurse quickly rushed towards him. "Sir, you have to sit aside and wait. The pregnant woman is in the examination room. You can't go in."
"I know. That woman inside is my wife. She has been in there for a long time and hasn't come out yet. Can you let me in so that I can see what is happening?" Jack was going crazy with worry.
Seeing the depth of his concern, the nurse calmly explained, "The examination time will be different for different patients. Some people need to be examined for more than half an hour. Please sit down and wait. If something is wrong, the doctor will inform you."
"But—" Just when Jack was getting ready to protest, the door of the outpatient room opened. Rachel and the doctor came out. They looked at Jack in confusion.
Rachel was the first to react. "Why are you standing here?" she demanded.
"Nothing," he said, looking like a deer caught in the headlights. But soon, he recovered from the awkwardness and stepped forward. Grabbing her hands, he asked worriedly, "How did it go? Is everything okay?"
"Everything is fine," Rachel said while withdrawing her hands. She felt embarrassed.
The doctor next to him was used to seeing such scenes. He chuckled, looked at Jack and said, "It has been seven months. Finally, you are here with your wife. I am guessing I won't have to make another copy of the examination report today, right?"
Lost in his concern for Rachel, he completely forgot about this. He was too embarrassed to say anything so he simply shook his head.
Hearing this, Rachel was puzzled. She looked up at him in confusion and asked, "What examination report are you talking about? What copy?"
Jack held her waist and said softly, "Let's go home first. We'll talk about it later."
On their way, Rachel kept on asking what the doctor was talking about. But Jack replied her with silence. When they finally entered the house, she frowned and said, "Now that we're home, don't keep me in suspense. Can you just tell me what happened?"
Jack motioned for her to sit down on the sofa and said, "Wait a minute." Then he went to the second floor. When he came down, he was holding a square iron box in his hand. He passed it to Rachel. Taking the box, she began to examine to contents inside. Her eyes were full of surprise, and her heart began to thud against her chest. It contained the results of her every antenatal examination and the B Ultrasound tests. The sheets were neatly placed. With her trembling lips, she asked, "What's going on?"
"Every time you went to the hospital for the prenatal checkups, I followed you there. Knowing you wouldn't like it, I didn't show up in front of you. But after you left, I asked the doctor to pass me a copy of your results." As he spoke, there was a bitter smile on his lips. He hated going behind her back like a thief and doing it.
When she heard this, her expression softened. She had been oblivious to everything that happened.
All this time, she had thought Jack didn't care about her. But it turned out he was observing her every move. He loved the baby in her belly as much as she did.
All of a sudden, Rachel felt warmth for him in her heart. She looked down at her tightly twisted hands and said, "But during those days you were with Scarlett..." Unable to finish the sentence, she trailed off.
Jack, noticing the discomfort, explained, "Rachel, nothing happened between me and her. I was with her just to make you jealous."
"Make me jealous?" Rachel asked, unable to understand what he meant.
Ashamed, Jack nodded his head. He once again went upstairs and fetched a document. Spreading it before her, he went on, "This is the agreement I signed with Scarlett. All I did was use her to make you jealous. You were ignoring me and I wanted to do something that would catch your attention."
Jack had never thought he would reveal this to Rachel.
Looking at the signature on the document, Rachel realized this wasn't a joke. He had indeed gone through the trouble of playing this ludicrous drama to gain her attention. Chuckling, she said, "Jack, how can you be so childish?"
"Yes, I am indeed childish," he admitted.
Suddenly, his face turned serious. "The worst part is I lost you completely due to my childish behavior."
He looked at her with his deep and passionate eyes, and Rachel felt heat pass through her body.
Jack smiled bitterly and continued, "When I had a car accident and lay in the hospital, I was waiting for you to come and see me. But nothing of that sort happened. You didn't bother to come. Later, when I managed to stand up, the first thing I did was come to see you. I got the shock of my life when I saw you and Jimmy sitting in the dining room, talking and laughing. I was so angry that I lost my mind and made things worse. Rachel, will you forgive me now?"
When he waited for her answer, he was so nervous that he even forgot to breathe.
Jack felt like someone was suffocating him. But he didn't care. He would rather die than hear a negative answer from her. Looking down, he saw her frowning. It seemed like she was deep in thoughts.
Jack asked, "Rachel, will you please say something?"
It took Rachel a while to come back to her senses. Tilting her head, she asked, "I came to the hospital after you had a car accident. How can you say I didn't care?"
"You had been there?" Jack asked as his eyes brightened with joy. But then he frowned because he had no recollection of it. "Perhaps they forgot to tell me," he said.
He guessed that Scarlett and Tracy had deliberately hidden the truth from him.
Rachel could also guess what had happened. But since it was all over, she knew there was no point in clearing things.
She nodded and said, "When I came to visit, you were sleeping. That's why you didn't know."
"Okay." With a sigh, Jack reached out and gently hugged her. "I didn't know my silliness would create so many misunderstandings between us. If I had known about it, I swear I would have done everything I could in order to avoid it."
Rachel never thought life would put her in such a situation.
Their happy relationship had become complicated in a blink of an eye.
But now, she couldn't help but wonder if their lack of communication had caused this. 'If we both had a healthy face-to-face conversation, could this have been avoided?'
After a moment of silence, Jack said in a gentle voice, "Rachel, let's start over, shall we?" All content is © N0velDrama.Org.
This was a question he had been dying to ask. "I don't know," she murmured.
Indeed, she had no idea what to do about this.
Even though she was moved by this revelation, she couldn't give him an affirmative answer. There were so many doubts in her mind.
If the two of them didn't bring serious change, the same ending would be waiting for them. She couldn't go through it again.
Rachel gently pushed him away and said, "Jack, let's talk about it some other time."
"Okay." Jack nodded, thinking that at least she hadn't refused him. This meant he still stood a chance. After the sincere conversation between them, the relationship between Jack and Rachel seemed to have changed.
He still cared about her a great deal and wasn't afraid of showing it. Rachel, who used to refuse his help earlier, resisted less and less. Gradually, she was embracing the love he was pouring on her.
On fine day, Rachel planned to have a lazy day at home. She decided to spend all her time watching TV, reading books and sleeping. But as soon as she got out of bed, she received a call from Lea who seemed to be in a horrible mood. "Rachel, come shopping with me. I'm bored to death staying at home alone."
"How could you be alone? Where is Rita?" While answering the phone, Rachel stretched out her hand to get the soy sauce from the kitchen cupboard.
But another hand gently grabbed hers. Jack was always by her side, ready to help her. Seeing this, Rachel pointed to the table in the hall and commanded him silently.
Lea sighed and said, "My father took her away."
"Then why don't you join them? It will be fun." Seeing that Jack was pouring a lot of soy sauce into the plate, Rachel made a gesture asking him to stop. But he didn't understand what she was trying to say so he continued to add more. She couldn't but shout, "Jack, I just want to eat dumplings. You have poured so much soy sauce. Are you planning to murder me?"
On the other end of the phone, Lea heard her words. Anxiously, she asked, "Rachel, what's going on? I'll pick you up right now. You have to come with me and explain the truth."
Hearing what Lea had said, Rachel let out a frustrated sigh. Perhaps she wasn't destined to have a peaceful day.
