Chapter 420 Invited To A Meal
Chapter 420 Invited To A Meal
"Actually, I have another favor to ask of you."
Jimmy said in a deep voice. "My mother and mother-in-law are both sick and bedridden. I have to deal with my wife's funeral, so I can't take care of my son. Dr. Shen, can you do me a favor?"
Before Rachel could answer, he said anxiously, "Don't worry. I will pay you, but I'm afraid I cannot pay a high rate. After all, I..."
His face turned red, and he glanced at Rachel, who hadn't spoken a word for a long time. He continued, "I know this request is a bit difficult to fulfill, so if it's too much for you, Dr. Shen, then forget it. I'll think of something else."
After saying that, he bid her goodbye and left. Before he could go any farther, Rachel called him back.
Jimmy turned around, and his eyes lit up. "Dr. Shen, are you agreeing to my request?"
Without answering, Rachel lowered her head, opened her drawer, and took out a business card. "Jimmy, you can contact this woman. Tell her that I mentioned her to you. She may agree to a low rate." This was the most help she could give.
In the past, during her rounds in the emergency room, some children were brought into the hospital all of a sudden without any parents or guardians. Under these circumstances, they usually contact nannies who specialized in child care to help them. The business card that Rachel gave the man belonged to a nanny whom Rachel was relatively familiar with.
Jimmy took the card. "Thank you, Dr. Shen. I'll call her right away."
After he left, Rachel looked at the medical records on her right and yesterday's half-completed application report in the computer. She had planned to finish this report today and send it to the
head for signing so that the grant could be disbursed immediately. Who would have thought that things would turn out that way?
As she walked to the pantry with her cup in hand, Rachel could vaguely hear her colleagues talking about this matter. Some of them complained of the woman's bad luck, while some commented on the couple's good relationship.
She poured hot water into her cup and was about to go back to her office when some of them stood in her way. A young woman asked, "Rachel, did you see that couple when you went to the ward yesterday? What did you think? Didn't they look so affectionate with each other?" "Not bad," she replied noncommittally. She did pass by them yesterday, but she wasn't exactly paying attention then.
Then another colleague patted the girl on the shoulder and giggled with a hand covering her mouth. "I heard that Rachel has a good relationship with her husband. You're asking the wrong person."
Since when did that rumor reach this hospital?
Rachel raised an eyebrow and did not answer. With an enigmatic smile, she walked around them and headed back to her office. The thought that she had been trying to suppress suddenly came to her mind again.
'Jack... How is he doing?'
In the ward, Jack glared at Michael, who lounging on the sofa and eating oranges, and asked coldly, "You really don't know what's going on with Rachel?"
He asked nearly everyone who came to visit him, but the answer was always the same.
With a pang of guilt, Michael looked down at the orange in his hand and replied casually, "How should I know?"
"Michael!" Jack roared menacingly, his voice raised by a few decibels.
Suddenly, Michael raised his head and frowned helplessly. "I really don't know! Don't say my name like that! You'd better recover soon so you could go and find her yourself."
He had no idea why Lea warned him from spilling Rachel's condition to Jack. If it weren't for Lea, then he would have told Jack everything that he knew.
Jack frowned and said in a low voice, "Call her right now."
Michael was taken aback by Jack's reversal. He was scrambling for an excuse to avoid doing Jack's order when Tracy came in and asked with a smile, "Who are you calling?"
Michael welcomed Tracy's unexpected entrance like a lifeline. He immediately offered the peeled orange to her and warmly said, "Auntie, you're here! Try this orange—it's really sweet!"
"That's okay. You go ahead and eat more."
Tracy placed a thermos on the table and turned to Jack. "I asked the maid to prepare some yam and fish soup for you today. I'll give you a bowl later."
Standing next to them, Michael breathed a sigh of relief. He knew that as long as Tracy was in the room, Jack would never mention anything about Rachel.
He popped the orange into his mouth and quickly said, "Jack, Auntie, I have to deal with something in the company. I'll head back first and come see you another day." Jack lowered his long eyelashes and nodded slightly. He was even more confused than before. All of them were keeping something from him. What happened to Rachel?
He had been angry because not even once did she show up at his bedside. Now, he had started to worry about her. Unease and anxiety weighed down his mind.
After two days, Jack could get out of bed and take two steps. As long as he walked slowly, he suffered no discomfort apart from the surgery wound.
Early in the morning, he slowly got out of bed. The nurse beside him immediately stirred and woke up when she heard the noise. She quickly stepped forward to him to assist him. "Mr. Fu, are you going to the bathroom?"
Jack withdrew his hand, pointed toward the wardrobe beside him, and said in a low voice, "Help me take my clothes out of the wardrobe. I have to get out of the hospital right now."
"Get out?" the nurse gasped out in horror. "You're not fit to be discharged at this point!"
Jack frowned and said, "I'm fine."
"But..."
Seeing that she had more to say, Jack's face suddenly darkened. "If you won't do it, then I'll go by myself. You can sit here in the ward." Hearing the steely undercurrent in his voice, the nurse didn't dare to say anything more. She quickly took the clothes out of the wardrobe, but she couldn't resist asking, "Should we inform Mrs. Fu and Miss Chen?"
"There's no need," Jack said coldly.
In the end, he wanted nothing more than to see Rachel. He couldn't even wait for his body to heal completely because he just couldn't wait to see her.
But if Scarlett and Tracy found out, he would be unable to leave the hospital to look for her.
The nurse hesitated and stood aside, not knowing what to do. If something happened to Jack, she was afraid that all of the responsibility would fall on her. At that thought, she decided to be on the
safe side. While Jack was changing his clothes, she took the opportunity to go to the bathroom and secretly sent a message to Scarlett. All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
Rachel parked her car in parking lot and was about to get out when she saw a boy standing outside, gently knocking on the window. His handsome face looked familiar.
When the little boy saw her looking at him, he took two steps back. Rachel opened the door and asked with a smile, "What's up, little boy?"
"Auntie, my father asked me to come to you," the little boy said politely and then shrugged his shoulders helplessly. "He just went to the bathroom."
Looking at his naughty look, Rachel couldn't help but laugh at the adorable kid. She raised her hand and patted him on the head. "Who is your father?"
"It's me." While they were talking, Jimmy ran out of the door. He was looking much better than he did two days ago. He smiled and said, "I have just finished dealing with my wife's matter. I had to come back to the hospital to thank you."
'Ah, so he's Jimmy's son.' No wonder the boy looked familiar, even though she had a hard time remembering whom he reminded her of. She sighed, thinking of how her pregnancy had made her memory deteriorate.
Just like now, when Jimmy mentioned wanting to thank her, she couldn't remember why immediately. Tilting her head, she asked, "Didn't you thank me before?"
Jimmy looked down at his son and smiled gracefully. "Last time, I thank you for working so hard on our grant. This time, I'm thanking you for introducing us to that nanny. She took good care of my son in these days, and the charge is very low, nearly half of the market price."
There was no suffering on her part to help them out, and Rachel had already forgotten about it.
She didn't expect that he would return with his son to thank her specifically. In the face of such fervent gratitude, she felt a little embarrassed and said, "I only introduced you to the nanny. You should thank her instead."
"Well, we—"
Before Jimmy could finish, his son interrupted him.
The boy stepped forward, held Rachel's hand, and lifter his small head. "Dad invited the nanny to eat with us. We're here to invite you, too."
"That's right," said Jimmy while looking dotingly down at his son. "I don't have anything else to thank you with. I can only invite you to a meal. I hope you won't mind."
"You don't have to be so polite."
"Dr. Shen, please join us with the meal."
Since he put it that way, it would be too arrogant of Rachel to refuse again. She nodded her head and replied with a smile, "Okay, I will be there at noon."
Sitting inside a taxi, Jack looked at the congested traffic in front of him and frowned. In his irritation, he hammered the seat beside him with his fists. He craned his head to look at the cars behind them and could only sigh helpless and wait.
It was already noon when his ride pulled up at the hospital. Seeing a group of doctors in white coming out of the building and walking towards the canteen, Jack stopped one of them and asked, "Excuse me, do you know how to get to the administrative department?"
"Ah, it's on the eleventh floor of the building up front."
