Chapter 403 Two Options
Chapter 403 Two Options
Without any hesitation, he picked up his phone and dialed a number. With a hint of nervousness in his voice, he asked the person on the other end, "Why did she go there?"
"It seems like she went there for a prenatal checkup."
Upon hearing the answer, Jack felt the breath whoosh out of his body as if he had been sucker- punched. It wasn't until the other person said "Hello?" for a few times that he suddenly snapped out of his reverie, and his expression suddenly changed. "How many months is she pregnant?"
"I don't know."
"Go and find out right away."
After hanging up the phone, Jack changed his clothes, grabbed his car keys, and left.
Tracy was about to call her friends and ask around if they knew a suitable woman to set Jack up with when he suddenly swept past her and got into his car.
She raised her voice and asked, "Son, where are you going?"
The only answer she got was the roar of the engine. Rachel received a call from the hospital saying that the non-invasive test results had come out. Unexpectedly, the results were released after seven days, whereas it usually took the hospital fifteen days to do so.
She was putting on her shoes on her way out to go to the hospital when the doorbell rang.
'Who could it be at this hour?'
Frowning, Rachel opened the door to the sight of Jack standing there gasping for breath. She froze in surprise, and then in the next moment, she made a move to slam the door in his face.Content © provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
Jack's hand shot out hastily and pressed on the door open. "Rachel, I have something to ask you."
"We have nothing to talk about." Rachel tried even harder to push the door closed.
The gap between the door and the frame was getting narrower. Jack was about to shove the door open when he caught a glimpse of Rachel's slightly protruding belly out of the corner of his eye. He suddenly regained his senses just to see the door slam back shut.
No matter how he knocked on the door or rang the doorbell, Rachel didn't answer him.
Behind the door, Rachel remained squatted on the floor with her back against it and her arms around herself. 'Has he left yet? Why did he come here? What does he want? Did he find out...'
Rachel slowly stood up and lowered her head to look at her belly. She was wearing a well-fitting dress today, so her baby bump was evident just now. She suddenly felt cold with fear. She ran back to the room and took out all the clothes in the wardrobe to pick her loosest overcoat.
Standing in front of the mirror for a long time, she made sure that there wasn't a hint of anything unusual showing. Then, she calmed down and opened the door again.
Jack had been waiting at the door without leaving. When he saw her open the door again, his dark and deep eyes lit up. He quickly walked forward and reached out to hold her hand.
Rachel moved aside to let him enter and said, "I have something to deal with later. If you have anything to say, just say it now."
If she wasn't in such a hurry to know the test results, then she would have locked herself in the room and not come out until he was gone.
"Where are you going? I'll drive you there." Jack's eyes gradually became gentle.
However, Rachel was unmoved. She looked straight at Jack for a while, and then turned away, saying in a cold voice, "No need. You can just say whatever you want to say. Otherwise, please don't linger in front of my door. I don't need a doorkeeper guarding my gate." 'A doorkeeper guarding her gate?'
Hearing her analogy, Jack was at a loss whether to cry or to laugh. It made him miss the days when she bickered with him.
But now, it seemed that the days were long gone.
Squinting slightly, Jack looked at Rachel's belly. Seeing her take two steps back and raise a hand subconsciously to cover her belly confirmed that the information he had received earlier was correct.
He said with conviction, "You are pregnant with our child!"
"How did you know?" Rachel asked in shock. After a while, she said with a cold smile, "I am pregnant, but who told you that the baby was yours?"
Jack frowned and said, "Rachel, why are you still being so contrary?"
"I'm just telling the truth!"
A faint sense of unease crept into her mind. Rachel tried her best to hide her pregnancy from the Fu family because she was afraid that they would try every means to take the child away from her.
She didn't want to continue this topic, so she pushed him aside and said in an even more glacial voice, "I have something else to do, so I don't have time to talk nonsense with you. I'm leaving now."
Jack didn't stop her but kept following her.
As soon as she got in a taxi, he hailed a cab for himself and instructed the driver to follow the taxi in front of them.
When she got out of the car, he also got out to follow her, keeping a distance of about one hundred meters from her.
Rachel couldn't stand it anymore. She stopped, whirled around, and stared at him with resentment. Her face turned pale with anger, and her breath became heavy. "Jack, I've told you that the baby in my belly is not yours. Can you stop flattering yourself? Do you think a baby borne by a woman who had a relationship with you would automatically be yours?" He was silent for a moment, staring at her.
"Then tell me, who is the father of the child?" Jack asked calmly, neither angry nor annoyed.
Rachel was just talking nonsense. How could she name the father of the child at that moment?
She bit her lower lip and said, "You don't need to know."
She turned around and was about to leave when Jack suddenly opened his arms and hugged her tightly from behind. His voice was shaking when he said, "Rachel, you don't have to rile me up on purpose. I know that this is our baby—the fruit of our love."
'Love?'
Hearing the word, Rachel suddenly became hysterical. She kept wriggling her body, trying to extricate herself from the shackles of Jack's arms. She shouted, "Jack, let go of me! There was never any love between us. If you really loved me, you shouldn't have hidden everything from me and made me look like a fool!"
Tears streamed out of her eyes like spring water. Rachel sobbed for several times and wanted to be strong and stop being so spineless, but she couldn't stop crying.
Worried that agitation might hurt the baby in her belly, Jack reluctantly let her go. "Rachel, please calm down."
"Just go, now. Don't appear before me ever again." Rachel pointed a hand away, opposite the direction where she was going.
Jack remained standing before her, unmoving. She couldn't help but shout, "Leave me alone!"
At this moment, Jack's narrowed eyes became warm and red. He did not want to go, but all he could so at that time was turn around and leave.
Rachel kept sobbing and wiping the tears from the corner of her eyes. She kept taking deep breaths to try to calm herself down. However, this reminder of the past pierced her heart like needles and left her hurting. Finally, Rachel started to calm down, and she walked slowly to the hospital. Fortunately, she received good news today. The non-invasive DNA test done last week came out. All data were normal, which meant that the baby in her belly was very healthy!
Looking at the data sheet, Rachel smiled. On her way home, she couldn't stop herself from walking into a baby store. She still didn't know the gender of her baby, but she ended up getting a large bag and looking around for cute baby clothes.
Several of them were of the same style but in different colors —pink and blue.
Now, she finally understood why Lea had gone to the exclusive shop for babies and picked up a whole shopping cart. She still remembered that she had laughed at Lea for buying lots of useless things, but now she knew that it was not a waste of money. As a mother, she wanted to buy all the things she thought were good for her baby.
Since Jack couldn't get into her house, he leaned against the wall and waited by the door. He looked at his watch from time to time until it was a little past seven that night. His heart suddenly
became a little flustered. 'Why hasn't she came back? Where did she go?'
He was about leave to look for her when the elevator doors opened. With several bags in her hands, Rachel walked out of the elevator. The smile on her face suddenly dropped when she saw Jack.
She pretended not to see him and went straight to open the door.
Jack walked forward to stand in front of her and asked in a low voice, "Rachel, what can I do to make you forgive me and return to me?"
'Forgive? Return to you?'
There was no expression on Rachel's face, but her head was churning, and her heart was questioning herself, 'Will that day ever come?'
She felt that the odds of her ever forgiving him were very slim.
She looked up at Jack calmly, her eyes devoid of emotion. "That would never happen again."
Jack didn't say anything, but the eyes that met hers were turbulent with emotion. After a moment of silence, a slight frost had crept into his voice. "Rachel, I can easily have you investigated and find out whether the child is my own flesh and blood.
However..." He paused, a trace of pain flashing across his dark eyes and disappearing quickly. He continued, "I'll give you two options now."
Rachel asked suspiciously, "What two options?"
Jack held up two fingers. "The first option is to go home with me. If you still haven't forgiven me by the time the baby is born, then I will let you go. I won't disturb you and the baby anymore."
