Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 75

She set down her fork and moved the tray aside. Still feeling a bit weak, she lay back down. Sleep wasn't coming, though, so she grabbed her phone, noticing over a dozen missed calls-mostly from Callum, with a couple from Joy. Opening her messages, she saw their texts waiting for her.

Callum: [Selena, are you feeling any better?]

Joy: [Hey, love. I'm really sorry I missed your call. Everett told me you had a fever. How are you doing now? Let me know when you're up.]

Even though she was feeling crummy, knowing people genuinely cared warmed her heart a bit. Selena was about to send reassuring replies when Callum's call came through.

She picked up, and his voice, as soothing as a gentle stream, poured into her ear. "Selena, how are you holding up? If your fever's still hanging around, maybe a trip to the hospital for a blood test is a good idea. I can set it all up for you." A smile tugged at her lips. "No worries, I'm on the mend. Thanks a ton for coming by yesterday with the meds and the shot. I was worried I'd lose my marbles with that fever."

It had felt like she was burning up at 104 degrees. Despite their decent relationship, Selena and Callum weren't at the "drop everything and rush over" stage. It was probably due to his kindness and a doctor's instinct to help. There was a pause before Callum spoke again. "I wasn't the one who gave you the meds and shot yesterday."

"Wait, what?" Selena was taken aback. "It was not you? Was it Everett? But... after three years of marriage, I never knew he had those kinds of skills!"

Amused, Callum let out a chuckle despite himself. "No, I got to your place but couldn't get in, so I called Everett. He didn't want to bother me and said another doctor was already on the way. Once the lady doctor arrived, I headed out." Selena was puzzled. Shouldn't doctors be indifferent to a patient's gender? Why bring in another doctor when Dr. Campbell was right there?

"Why didn't you just do it? You're a perfectly good doctor. What was Everett thinking? Wait a minute..." A thought Kit her, and she lowered her voice, "Dr. Campbell, aren't you and Everett tight? Why do I feel like that there is this weird tension between you two?"

She'd seen Everett with Jaime, and they were clearly best buds.

Curiosity got the better of her. "You're not, like, fair-weather friends, are you?"

Realizing that might be off the mark, she reconsidered. If they didn't trust each other, why would Everett entrust his grandfather's care entirely to Callum? Everett's grandfather was his top priority.

Worried she might've overstepped,

she was about to backtrack, but Callum didn't seem bothered. He answered honestly, "Our friendship is gengine, but... we once competed for the same cherished thing, which caused some friction."

Whoa!

Selena was floored by the drama. What kind of treasure could make two accomplished men go head-to-head, putting their friendship on the line?

Her curiosity piqued, she sat up,

propped a pillow behind her, and settled in for the juicy details. She pondered for men, the big deals were usually money or women Since money wasn't an issue for these two, it had to be a woman.

Could this "cherished thing" be Margot?Content provided by NôvelDrama.Org.

The thought jolted her, and she couldn't bear the idea. It was better to ask than assume. Clearing her throat, she carefully asked, "So, who ended up winning?" Callum's usually steady voice carried a tinge of regret. "I missed my chance."
