Shadow stared deeply into Lisa’s eyes, her voice sending shivers down anyone’s spine. “Apologize? What could I possibly have to apologize for?”
In Lisa’s memories, her daughter was once smart and beautiful as a child. But as she grew older, she became uglier and more foolish. This sudden change in Shadow’s temperament, with the sharpness in her eyes, caught Lisa off guard.
“Jessica,” Lisa whispered to her step-daughter swallowing nervously. “Let’s forget about today, okay? If she gets angry and does something reckless, I’m afraid…”
Though Jessica was reluctant, she had no choice but to let the matter go.
If Shadow did something to anger the powerful Lances family, they would all be in danger. Jessica had just escaped a bad situation with a man she couldn’t stand, and she wasn’t going to risk her luck a second time.
If the Lances family was furious, how could they all maintain their luxurious lives in this wealthy household?
Seeing her mother and step-sister struck dumb, Shadow turned and headed upstairs to her room to pack her belongings.
She had lived in the Eden Family mansion for over 20 years, but even with all the clothes and possessions in her closet, she always felt like an outsider. Her mother was too busy with her own life to pay attention to her step-sister and bother with her.
When she came downstairs with her suitcase, the hallway was empty. Lisa had clearly had enough of her already.
But Shadow didn’t care. The sooner she left this house, the better.
Yet, as she thought of Alpha Kilian’s cousin waiting for her at the front gates, she hesitated and decided to leave through the back door instead.
She didn’t know why that cousin of Alpha Kilian’s was so interested in her, but she knew for certain that she needed to stay away. Making an enemy of a man like Alpha Kilian Lances was as good as signing her own death warrant. There was no way she could escape unscathed.
Outside the front gate, Alpha Kilian waited for Shadow for a long time, growing impatient.
What was taking her so long?
Suddenly, the folder from yesterday flashed in his mind, making him frown. Could it be that she was being mistreated by her own family?
Alpha Kilian couldn’t help but touch his face, the spot she had slapped, and snorted coldly. That woman was like a fierce wildcat. She wasn’t someone who could be easily bullied.
Yet, despite his thoughts, he couldn’t shake off the unease in his heart.
“Would you like to come in, sir?” a soft voice sounded outside the car. Alpha Kilian turned to look out the window and saw a woman with delicate features standing gracefully beside the car.
Jessica was stunned when she saw his face.
She had witnessed Shadow kissing a man in the car, but she hadn’t been able to see his face clearly. She had expected him to be decent, but she didn’t anticipate his remarkable beauty and elegance.
How could such an extraordinary man be interested in Shadow, that stupid and ugly girl?
Maybe Shadow was the one who had pursued him after all.
However, it seemed like walking out to try her luck had been the right move.
Alpha Kilian saw through Jessica’s intentions and sneered. “Who are you?”
“I am Shadow’s older sister. You can call me Jessica,” she replied, unfazed by his indifference.

Now that Alpha Kilian remembered, there were two daughters in the Eden family. Besides Shadow, the other one was his fiancee, albeit at a low price.
Most people would say Jessica was as beautiful as a flower under the sun, but she wasn’t his type. Shadow’s ugly appearance was more appealing to him.
He didn’t have the patience to talk to her any longer and asked emotionlessly, “Where’s Shadow?”
“She… She might still be packing in her room. She asked me to come down and tell you to come inside.” Jessica didn’t want to let this opportunity slip by. The Lances family, with their wealth, status, and stunning looks, was a prize she didn’t want to miss.
Seeing through her intentions, Alpha Kilian couldn’t help but sneer.
So, she was just trying to get him inside?
She had probably already escaped!
Shadow returned directly to the small apartment she rented.
During college, she had lived in the school hostel, and after graduation, she rented an apartment away from her family. Though the room lacked luxury, it signified a fresh start. And it didn’t have the same emptiness as that hellhole.
If Lisa hadn’t trapped her in that home to secure a mating into the Lances family, Shadow would never step foot in that place.
Regardless, Alpha Kilian wasn’t at the Castle and didn’t want to see her. So, what was the problem if she stayed there?
After settling back into her home and unpacking some things, it was already afternoon. She quickly got ready and planned to go out and buy something.
She lived in a renowned slum in the Moonlight Pack, with inconvenient transportation and a mix of good and bad people.
As soon as she turned into an alley, she heard a loud bang.
Was it a gunshot?
Before she could determine the situation, she looked up and saw a white van speeding towards her, out of control like a wild dog.
Its headlights flickered as it approached, and in shock, she found herself momentarily frozen. It was only when the van was mere inches away from her that she finally darted to the side.
But the van didn’t stop there. The door flung open, and a tall man jumped out.
He rolled to her feet, tucking his head.
She was about to step back, but the man suddenly sprung up, pressing something cold against her temple. His pleasant voice sounded somewhat familiar. “Get me out of here, quickly.”
When Shadow looked up and saw the man’s face clearly, she exclaimed in shock, “Alpha Dominic!”
