Chapter 2 Vigil
Fairen Evert forced himself to endure the pain in his feet and fled to the bathroom to shut himself up.
In the warm yellow light of the room, the wound on her foot looked a bit ghastly, and she gritted her teeth and rinsed it with cold water.
The cool chill poured over her leg, and the uneasiness and chaos inside her was smoothed out a little.
When did she become so cautious, so afraid of losing her chance, when she knew that it was clearly not her fault?
But even so, she’s no longer the rich girl who used to have her clothes on her back, her food on her table, and who was treated like a jewel in the palm of her hand.
So she has to put up with it. No matter what Maxton West does to her, she has to get the job done.
Fairen Evert spent half an hour inside and came out as if nothing had happened.
When she came out, she bumped into the housekeeper who appeared at the stairway. The housekeeper was a bit old and had a slightly wrinkled face filled with a look of perspective.
“Miss Evert …” The butler spoke up, thinking that Fairen Evert might resign next, after all, he had seen such phenomena before, and the young master was not as approachable as one might think.
Fairen Evert, however, raised a light smile and interrupted the butler: “May I ask what my next job is?”
At those words, a trace of surprise flashed under the butler’s eyes for a moment before he said, “Night watch.”
The housekeeper arranged a guest room for Fairen Evert, right next door to Maxton West’s room, so that she could rest directly when she was tired.
Maxton West did not like the presence of other people in the room, so Fairen Evert had to keep watch outside the room.
She sat down on the floor with only a thin jacket on and shivered at the cold chill on the floor.
Late in the night, Fairen Evert leaned against the wooden lintel and fell asleep without realizing it.
Suddenly, there was a movement in front of the door and it was opened from the inside.
This startled Fairen Evert, who was deeply sleepy, and she subconsciously moved back a bit.
She looked up in amazement as Maxton West’s tall, erect figure enveloped her from above, his eyes clear, not at all like someone who woke up in the middle of the night.
“What, you want to climb into bed in the middle of the night?” Maxton West gave her drowsy face a sarcastic look.
Fairen Evert pursed her lips and did not reply. In the short time she had spent with Maxton West this day, she had gained some insight into his personality and had become accustomed to his mocking tone.
“Get out of the way.” Maxton West saw that Fairen Evert did not respond, a trace of impatience flashed under his eyes, raised his leg and was ready to go out.
Fairen Evert froze and immediately said, “Sir, what do you need to order me.”
Maxton West smiled, his thin lips lightly hooked, “Toilet, you help me?”This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
Fairen Evert froze, his ears quickly reddened and he lowered his head.
As he watched Maxton West fade into the stairway, the dim light of the night fell on his body, and Fairen Evert felt a silence that could not be dissolved.
As Maxton West came back into the room and prepared to close the door behind him, he glanced lightly at Fairen Evert, who was still sitting on the floor, and said, “Is this how a chaperone keeps watch?”
With those words, he walked into the room and the door was thrown open, but not closed.
Fairen Evert stared blankly at Maxton West, reacted and immediately stood up and walked into the room.
“Stay away from me.” Maxton West threw down the words, lifted the covers and lay down on the bed.
Fairen Evert had to sit down on the couch in the room and stay quietly on the sidelines.
Although she felt a little uncomfortable being in the same room as Maxton West, the soft couch soon made her sleepy.
As she drifted off to sleep, Fairen Evert faintly heard a low, muffled grunt, and her senses made her open her eyes immediately and sit up subconsciously.
The low, raspy sound came from Maxton West, and Fairen Evert immediately got off the couch to check on Maxton West’s condition.
He was frowning and whimpering intermittently in the cool light of a chandelier above the bed.
A thin layer of sweat oozed from his forehead, and his thin lips were pursed beneath his high nose.
Fairen Evert was stunned.
She stood by, somewhat overwhelmed, but seeing that Maxton West’s condition had not abated, she was unsure if he had a fever, so she reached for his forehead.
She gently and carefully covered Maxton West’s forehead so as not to wake him up.
It was moist, unfamiliar and palpitating to the touch.
Fairen Evert was relieved that his forehead was only sweating and not burning, and was about to pull her hand away when it was clutched by a large palm.
Fairen Evert was startled to see Maxton West slowly open his eyes, and beneath his long, dense lashes were a pair of deep eyes.
Perhaps because of the awakening, his eyes were disoriented for a moment, and Fairen Evert felt overwhelmed by the scene.
She struggled a little to get her arm back, not wanting the same situation to happen again with Maxton West’s disgust and dislike for her still fresh in her mind from the afternoon.
Instead of letting go of her arm, Maxton West clutched it a little tighter.
Maxton West’s eyes grew from dazed to awake, but became confused as he looked at Fairen Evert and then at his own grip on her hand. A look of deep surprise crossed his eyes.
He had always had an aversion to the touch of strangers and even insurmountable barriers, but now he could approach this woman with no difficulty at all.
Why …
Fairen Evert saw Maxton West’s frown grow deeper and deeper, worried that he had misunderstood again, and hastened to explain: “It’s like this Mr. West, I saw you having a nightmare and was worried that you had a fever so …”
Her words had not finished, but came to an abrupt end when she felt the strong force around her waist.
Only to see Maxton West reach around her waist without a word and she was forced to sit on her knees on his bed.
Maxton West seemed to be further validated by his own thoughts, and his eyes were filled with consternation.
How could he really approach her without any obstacles?
“Mr. West, what are you doing?” Fairen Evert was so startled by him that she immediately jumped up from the bed.
She had no idea what Maxton West’s temperament was, let alone what his sudden actions meant in the middle of the night.
“Come here.” Maxton West ordered, completely unfazed.
Fairen Evert shook his head evasively and subconsciously kept backing up.
For the first time, Maxton West took a good look at the woman.
She was wearing a thin knitted jacket, the texture of which was soft and made her whole person more and more gentle.
Her face was unpowdered, but she had the cleanest air, and her eyes were soulful and clear under her beautiful eyebrows.
If he remembered correctly, feeling that gentle touch on his forehead, the moment he opened his eyes, he actually felt a long-lost peace of mind and comfort.
