Chapter 1263
"Where are Jacob and Carly?"
Hearing their names, Hawthorn's face froze, and Kenneth slammed the documents on the desk with a loud thud. The noise echoed, making Hawthorn's pulse race.
"Why are you deliberately targeting them?" Kenneth frowned, clearly irritated. "The training field isn't that big. Do you think no one notices?"
He had been the one to keep things under control.
"You're on my team, and targeting trainees like that is unacceptable. If you don't want to be an instructor, you don't have to be."
Seeing Kenneth genuinely angry, Hawthorn felt a wave of panic. "Captain, I was just following orders..."
Kenneth's gaze turned sharp.
"Whose orders?"
"It was..." Hawthorn hesitated, then blurted out, "It was your sister-in-law! She told me to go after Jacob and Carly..."
Sydney...
Kenneth rubbed his forehead, feeling the onset of a headache. He guessed Sydney was holding a grudge against the Gilbert family.
"Stop this immediately," Kenneth said, pressing his temples. "And you've gone too far."
Since it was Sydney's request, he could turn a blind eye, but Hawthorn had overstepped.
This was bound to cause trouble sooner or later.
"The Gilbert family doesn't know anyone in the Enforcement Division, so what are you worried about? You're in charge here; they can't stir up anything big. Besides, I was just trying to help your sister-in-law vent!" Hawthorn added quickly, noticing Kenneth's anger seemed to have lessened.
"Assessments for heirs of influential families are serious business; you can't just act out of spite," Kenneth said, still upset but mindful of Sydney. He sighed, "Tomorrow is open day. Make sure Jacob and Carly don't run into anyone from the Gilbert family." Kenneth feared they might complain.
The Gilbert family was known for being protective, and it could turn into a big issue.
He couldn't understand why the boss suddenly arranged an open day, but he was on the brink of a promotion and couldn't afford any complications.
"I got it!" Hawthorn nodded eagerly.
He wouldn't let Jacob and Carly meet anyone from the Gilbert family.

By early morning, a big crowd had gathered outside the training field. At nine, the gates finally opened, much to the anticipation of the crowd. Flora, along with Mae, Joey, and Gerald, waited lazily.
They were curious about how Jacob and Carly were doing these past few days.
Gerald, as usual, wore his stoic expression, but his eyes were glued to the entrance, clearly eager to see Jacob.
"Instructor, where are Jacob and Carly? Why aren't they out yet?" Mae asked, her neck sore from looking around, as she pulled aside an instructor.
"Jacob and Carly?" The instructor scratched his head. "They're in platoon four, not under my watch... Ah, there's Hawthorn! Over here!"
The instructor waved Hawthorn over. "He's the instructor for platoon four; ask him."
Hawthorn Kept a polite smile. "Joey, right? Well, Jacob and Carly have been a bit mischievous and made a few mistakes, so I've got them doing extra training. They probably won't be out today."
"What kind of mistake could be so serious? Today's open day, let them come out and see us," Mae insisted.
Hawthorn shook his head with a
smile. "Joey and Mae, you're reasonable folks; you should understand. I've got my methods, and these kids need it. They can't come out today."
With that, Hawthorn turned and left.
Being from the Enforcement Division, he didn't feel the need to explain further.
Flora squinted at Hawthorn's retreating figure, sensing something was off.
It seemed like...
He was avoiding letting them meet Jacob and Carly.
Mae felt particularly down about not seeing them, and Joey quickly tried to cheer her up. "Come on, don't be sad. It's just a special situation today yeah? These kids, always picking the worst times to act up! Flora, sweetheart, come comfort your Aunt Mae, Flora-"
But there was no response. Joey turned around-
Huh???
Flora was just there, wasn't she?
Where did she go?!
