Fated to the Ruthless CEO

Devlin has been regularly visiting Amber in her office for five straight working days now. He already got the attention of everyone in the company.

Amber wanted to ban Devlin from coming to her company but that would get more attention from her employees and the media. She decided to face him with complete indifference. For the last few days, she has been trying hard to act casually with him. She tried to put in her head that Devlin is just one of her clients. However, as days went by, she could not believe that her hatred towards him slowly waned down.

Devlin didn’t back down despite all her cold treatment towards him. And she has to admit it, that the walls she built around her are slowly breaking down.

Every time he comes to her office, he would just talk casually to her about his day. What he did in his meetings and other things. And at night, he always invites her to dinner.

Right now, it’s a Friday night. They are waiting for their order to be served. They are dining in a Japanese restaurant. They have superb service. Devlin vouched that their food was great.

He was right! The food was excellent. And she enjoyed their light conversations together. Devlin never talked about their past. He just opened up some casual topics that they both find interest in.

“So tell me, when can I see marmee?” He asked out of the blue while they were having a glass of wine.

That completely surprised Amber. She never expected him to mention marmee as none of them mentioned their past. And mentioning marmee would only bring her memories to the past.

She did not know that Devlin hired someone to look after marmee. He paid someone to disguise as one of their farm workers. He just wanted Amber and her grandmother to be both safe and protected. From his troubles in the past in his company, he wanted to make sure that his loved ones are protected. He even had personal bodyguards for his parents.

“Uhmm…marmee is still at the farm. I am not sure it would be a good idea to just come and see her. Her health is not in the best condition nowadays but she is stubborn. She does not want to stay here with me for a long time. She misses her life at the farm.” Amber said with a hint of sadness.

Devlin knew that, too. The guy he hired to guard marmee always gives him an update almost everyday. Unbeknown to Amber, Devlin has been visiting her grandmother over the last few years. He explained everything that happened between him and Amber to her grandmother. Of course, she was angry at him at first but eventually she forgave him.

The next day, Amber woke up to the incessant doorbell. She checked the wall clock and it is quarter to 7 am. Who would be visiting her at this time? It’s the weekend. Usually she starts her day a little bit late.

She stood up, quickly washed her face. She just put on her robe. She quickly brushed her hair with her fingers.

Whoever is outside should better be important. She muttered to herself.

The moment she opened the door, Devlin’s smiling face welcomed her. She was gaping at him. They were just together last night for dinner. And now, he is her visitor early in the morning.

“Good morning. I am sorry to wake you up. Breakfast?” He gave her a boyish smile. She was ready to give her some harsh words but she simply gave him a grimmed expression. She opened the door for him.

She doesn’t understand herself anymore when it comes to Devlin. She has been fighting back her feelings towards him but when he is in front of her, she simply loses all her thoughts.

This is the first time that Devlin came to her condo. However, he made himself comfortable in her place. He immediately went to her kitchen. He set the food he brought for breakfast on the table.

“I am sorry. I will get our breakfast ready. Just go and take a shower. We are going somewhere after breakfast.” He declared. Amber just arched her eyebrow at him. Some things would never change. He still would like to impose himself on her. He did not even tell her he is coming nor are they going somewhere. He is acting just like before.

But the odd thing is that she did not refuse to go with him. In fact, if she were to be completely honest to herself, all her anger towards him is almost gone. She feels more annoyed at him.

After she took a shower, she spent her time looking for a nice, comfortable outfit. She donned a white tank top and beige shorts. She completed her outfit with beige cropped polo. She does not know where they are going. She thought they might be walking around the city. So, she decided to pair her outfit with her comfy white sneakers.

She marched her way towards the kitchen where she left Devlin. He was there busy talking to someone over the phone. When he saw her, he immediately gave her a big smile. The kind of smile that would melt any woman’s heart including hers.

Devlin ended the call the moment he saw Amber. She always looks beautiful in whatever outfit she is wearing. Now, she is even more beautiful. It must be the confidence she gained that made her even beautiful.

“You look great!” He said candidly. He saw Amber’s face turning slightly red. She tried to not smile at his compliment but he knew that it did affect her.

“Are you hungry?” Amber only nodded her head. She was about to make a cup of coffee but Devlin beat her to it. He already prepared coffee for them. It just needs to be heated up.

“Just sit down. I got it.” He immediately stood up. A few minutes later, they were both enjoying their breakfast in silence.

“So, where are we going?” She asked when they finished their breakfast. Amber was quickly doing the dishes while Devlin was helping her clean up the table. She was looking at him once in a while when he wasn’t looking at her. She can see excitement on his face.

She does not know where they are going and he did not even answer her question. She wanted to change her mind but something in her wanted to go out. To go out with Devlin and be carefree again. Just like before.

They are now inside the private plane of Devlin going to somewhere only Devlin knew. It took a lot of convincing from Devlin until she relented. She did not want to come with him. She thought he may bring her to Seattle. Her work is in New York.

“I swear I am going to take the immediate flight back to New York if you bring me to Seattle. What has come to you? You know I cannot just travel readily unless it is for business.” She said while looking angrily at him. But the brute only smiled sweetly at her.

“Relax. You made it sound like I kidnapped you.” He chuckled softly.

“Isn’t that what you did? You forced me to come to your private plane!” She answered back angrily.

“How can you prove that I kidnapped you? You don’t have any scratches or bruises anywhere on your body. Besides, you did not refuse earlier when I invited you to go somewhere.” He winked at her.

“You know what, I regret that I made a fool of myself.” She said in frustration. He thinks this is funny.

She stood up and moved to the other side, far away from Devlin. She was looking from the window when she slowly drifted to sleep. The next thing she realized was a warm hand touching her cheek.

“Hey baby, we are here. I don’t want to wake you up but we have to go. The car is waiting for us.” Am

ber was a bit disoriented. She forgot that she was in the private plane with Devlin. She did not say anything to him. However, she realized that they are in California. Her eyes went big when she realized where they were heading.

“We are going to marmee.” She whispered while deep in her thoughts. She has so many questions in her head.

‘How did Devlin do all these things? As far as she remembered, marmee was also upset at what he did years ago. Has her marmee forgiven him? And when did it happen? Her marmee never told her anything.’

Their car suddenly stopped, taking back Amber’s attention to the present.

“We are here, baby.” Devlin whispered close to her ear. Amber cleared her throat and quickly opened the car door.

She missed this place. She visited her marmee like four months ago. She has been persuading her to come back and live with her in her condo in New York. But her grandmother was very stubborn. She wanted to stay on the farm. She told her that the city life does not suit her.

She usually visits her every two months but there are times that her company takes much of her time. Besides, she had to go for some business trips. That’s why she really wanted her grandmother to come with her but all her attempts were all in failure.

For sure, her grandmother would be surprised and happy to see her. However, some questions in her head lingered. She needed to talk to her grandmother about Devlin.
