Jillian laughed softly while eyeing her friend who seemed annoyed about what she just told her.

“I mean, why not Elijah? It is time for you to give yourself a chance at love. And whoever hurt you before, it was his loss. Look at you right now. You built a huge company successfully all by yourself. Not to mention that you are such a beautiful woman. Of course, men would really fall for you. But it seems like you have other things in your head.” Jillian can be really brutally honest at times. But she likes that quality in her.

“I am not interested. I am not really looking for anyone right now. I don’t even have time to hang out with you.” She reasoned out, hoping that her friend would stop talking about men. She is not desperate to be in a relationship. Being alone does not mean that she is lonely. It was her choice and she was happy with it.

“Hmmm… something is telling me that you are hiding something?” Jillian and all her wild imaginations.

‘What are you talking about?” Amber acted like she had no idea what her friend was trying to drive at.

“Do you know Mr. Devlin Wesley?” Jillian asked frankly. She saw how Mr. Wesley was talking to her friend and how he looked at her. Looks like the two had something in the past.

“Why are you saying that? We were simply talking about my award and the upcoming event.” She was quick to reply. Good thing she was able to think fast. That was a good excuse why she was talking to Devlin.

Jillian looked at her face closely. She looked like she was not convinced at all.

“You can’t fool me, Amber. We have been friends for four years now. And in those years, I have set you up with so many blind dates. You refused all of them. You never really entertained no one, not even Elijah who has been your consistent suitor. You know that I can vouch for him that he is a good man.” Jillian really put her friend in the hot seat. And she could see that Amber is not comfortable with their conversation.

“There was really nothing to it. We were just talking about the event. He is a successful businessman himself. He was also invited to that event.” Amber said, hoping Jillian would not ask more about Devlin.

“I am sorry. But whatever you had with Mr. Wesley, be careful with him. He is a certified heartbreaker.” Jillian added. Amber only stayed quiet. She was right about what she said.

“There you are, sweetie. Come here, please. Mom wanted to show you something.” Jacob lovingly said to Jillian.

“Amber, may I have a moment with this lovely lady here?” Jacob said with a big smile. Amber only nodded and smiled at him while Jillian could not stop giggling.

“You’re such a big tease, sweetheart.” Jillian giggled further.

“That’s why you love me.” Jacob winked at her. Amber was looking at them while trying to suppress her laugh. Her friend really knows how to tease her man.

Jillian left with Jacob to see her future mother-in-law. Amber also went around to socialize with the other guests. She was talking to someone when she heard his familiar voice again.

“Amber, may I have a moment with you please?” She did not expect that Devlin was still at the party. She thought he left earlier. She did not see him anywhere.

“What are you doing? We already talked earlier.” She whispered with gritted teeth. Instead of answering her, he was talking to the lady whom Amber had an interesting conversation with.

“Will you excuse us for a moment Ms. Wilkins?” He said, using his charming smile. Of course, any woman would fall for his charm but not her. She only rolled her eyes at him. Annoyed that he could just easily impose himself on her. However, she lets him guide her wherever he wants them to talk. She does not want to create any issues that would get the attention of the other guests.

Devlin took her to the rooftop of the three story bar. When they got out, she felt the cold air hitting her body. She did not bring her jacket that she left in her car. Devlin took off his jacket and put it on her.

“I am totally fine. You can have it.” She refused.

“So tell me, what else do you want to talk about? We already had a talk earlier. That was enough.” She said with calmness while looking at the glaring lights of the city in front of them.

“Amber, I meant every word I said earlier. It was hard for me to just look at you from afar after all these years.” He started but Amber was looking at him with a confused look.

“What do you mean by what you just said? Have you been following me? For what?” She laughed sarcastically. She paused, appalled by his lies.

“Please spare me from all your lies. Whatever we had a long time ago, it was all done. We both have moved on.” She continued while looking at him with anger in her eyes.

“I have no reason to lie to you. If you follow the news, you should know what happened to me. I was embroiled in difficult problems within my company. It was not just one big problem. There were multiple of them. One after another. I did not want to drag you in my life and strain our relationship further.” He paused, looking at her with great intensity. He stepped closer towards Amber but she moved back a few steps until she hit against the wall. There is no way for her to avoid him.

“You stay right there, Mr. Wesley.” Amber had to stop him. She did not want to be in close proximity with him. Knowing his effect on her, she wanted to avoid any stupid mistakes that she may commit.

“Why, baby? Are you afraid that if I get any closer you would lose it? That you would melt in my arms again?” He said looking straight into her eyes. He wanted to see the kind of look she used to give him before. Love, care, compassion… so many things. He could not find them right now.

“You, conceited brute! Why are you doing all of these? Is this part of your plan again to get your revenge? I have paid more than enough. Just please, leave me alone. I am happy and content with my life right now. I don’t want to go back to that dark, horrible past.” Her body was shaking from overwhelming emotions.

“There was no us, remember? Probably, you just enjoy giving me a hard time.” Amber added. Devlin was at a loss for words to say.

“There is us. We are married. You are still my wife just as I am your husband. Your rightful place is with me. So, I am claiming you back.” Devlin touched her hand but she pulled it strongly.

“You take me for an idiot? Well, five years have changed me. I would not have reached where I am right now if I had not learned my lessons very well. And you were a part of that big lesson I learned in life.” She could not believe where she got all her strength talking to him without breaking down.

“I can see that. I am proud of everything that you achieved but I was not proud of what I did to you.” He said honestly with sadness and regret in his eyes.

“Amber, my brother and Raven are happily married right now. I am happy for them as well.” Devlin really wanted Amber to open her mind and heart to whatever he is going to say.

“Devlin, things have changed. Everyone has changed, including you and me. Just leave the past behind. Probably, if it didn’t happen, I would not be this successful right now.” Amber just wanted him to stop.

“Amber, no. You are the reason why I stayed sane after all these years. I vowed to take you back. I only gave you your space and time since that was what you asked for. I know I made a huge mistake and I could not change that. I can only move forward and learn to be the better version of myself.” Devlin looked into her eyes to see any reaction from her.

“Do you know how many times I wanted to run to you and just hug you? All those problems took a toll on me. It was too much. I have no one to support me. And each night before I go to bed, it is always your face that would make me fall to sleep.” He said sincerely. There was a time that he could not even eat properly or sleep right because of too many problems he had to face in his company.
