Chapter 223
Eileen suddenly felt like a fish out of water. She looked blankly at the person in front of her.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed her shoulder.
Startled, she turned around to see Egbert by her side.
He lowered his head and whispered in her ear, "Don't freak out."
With that, he led her into the room.
At this point, Josephine took off her birthday hat and walked up with a worried expression. She took Eileen's hand and said, "Did I scare you? I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I just wanted to surprise you. Geez, you look like you've seen a ghost. What's the matter?"
As she spoke, Josephine gently stroked Eileen's face with a look of pity.
Just then, a disgruntled cough suddenly sounded from behind.
Josephine turned around to see her sister squinting at her with a warning look.
Feeling a bit awkward, Josephine dropped her hand and led Eileen over to the cake. "Here, look at this. It's a double-layer ice cream cake, the most expensive kind. Do you like it?"
Upon hearing "most expensive", Eileen nervously glanced at Rosalind who was nearby.
After a moment, she nodded, "I like it."
Josephine laughed and said, "That's good, that's good."NôvelDrama.Org owns © this.
Isabel was getting impatient. The little girl raised her arm and pointed to her digital watch, "It's almost midnight!"
"Oh, it's almost midnight!" Josephine was busy lighting the candles while complaining, "Egbert really took his sweet time driving. We almost didn't make it!"
Eileen paused, then quickly explained, "Egbert's hand was injured. He didn't drive, I did..."
"Oh, it's okay, it's okay."
After lighting the candles, Josephine set down the lighter and quickly patted Eileen's hand. "You did right by driving carefully. It's dark out there. Speeding is not safe. You did well. Girls are more careful than boys. They are just so careless!"
At this, Egbert slightly furrowed his brows.
Albert also frowned, but out of dissatisfaction. He glared at his son and said, "Just because of a small injury, you let a girl drive late at night! Bottom line, you are physically weak. You've gotten complacent after becoming a star! You should practice more, understand?"
Egbert took a deep breath, and in the end, he simply responded with a faint "OK."
Eileen felt that the old man didn't understand the situation. She explained again, "It's not a small injury, not a small injury. Egbert was shot!"
Albert waved his hand dismissively, "Eileen, you don't need to make excuses for him. A real man can handle a small gunshot wound. It's not like he's crippled. It's not that serious!"
What was going on? Eileen was a bit confused.
Was Egbert picked up from somewhere?
Josephine was disappointed in her son's behavior and didn't want to talk about him anymore. She took Eileen's hand and said, "Come, let's make a wish and then blow out the candles."
At this moment, the servant turned off the lights.
The entire living room plunged into darkness, with only the orange light from the cake candles flickering.
Eileen looked at the large two-layer cake in front of her with "Happy Birthday Eileen" written on it.
She hadn't celebrated her birthday in a long time. The earliest birthday celebration she could remember was when she was very young. Then, her father passed away. Later, her grandparents also passed away.
Since Sarah brought her to the Lopez family, she hadn't celebrated her birthday. The only birthday Sarah celebrated for her was in her previous life when Sarah drugged her and sold her to an underground factory.
For a long time, Eileen had no real feeling for the word "birthday".
But now, looking at the familiar faces around her, Eileen felt warmth in her heart.
She closed her eyes, put her hands together in front of her chest, and made a wish. Then, she opened her eyes, leaned over, and blew out the candles.
"Wow!" Isabel cried out excitedly.
The lights in the room came back on, music began to play from the speakers, and everyone started singing the birthday song.
By the last line, Rosalind's eyes were red.
Josephine turned her face away, wiped the corner of her eye with a tissue, then turned back with a forced smile, pretending she hadn't cried. Eileen saw this and felt a pang in her heart.
Josephine glanced at her, then took Rosalind's shoulder and asked Eileen, "Eileen, do you have anything you want to say?"
Eileen hesitated, then looked at Rosalind, "I..."
Josephine encouraged her, "You can say whatever you want."
Eileen tightly clenched her fingers, hesitated for a moment, then plucked up the courage to look at Egbert, "Egbert, I have something to say to you!"
Both Josephine and Rosalind looked disappointed, but Egbert just laughed, "Hmm? What's up?"
Eileen said, "I want to tell you to stick to acting and don't try singing. Your singing is... well, it leaves a lot to be desired."
Egbert was speechless.
Albert wanted to tease his son, but was suddenly hit by Josephine.
Albert rubbed his arm and turned to look at Josephine.
Josephine glared back at him, looking disappointed that Eileen chose to talk to Egbert instead of Rosalind. "Let's cut the cake. Where's the knife?"
The servant quickly brought over the cake knife, and Rosalind handed the silver knife to Eileen.
Eileen took the knife, keeping her head down, not daring to look at Rosalind, then sliced the cake. Afterwards, the servant cut the cake into smaller pieces and distributed them to everyone.
Isabel didn't get any cake because children shouldn't eat sweets at night.
Isabel was a little envious, so she sneakily tugged at Eileen's clothes and looked up at her pleadingly, "Isabel wants some..."
Eileen squatted down and whispered to the little girl, "No cake for you, I barely have enough for myself!"
Eileen chuckled and after teasing the little girl, she scooped a spoonful of cake, sneaking it into Isabel's mouth.
Isabel gobbled it up in one bite, then hugged her neck, resting her little head on her shoulder.
The clock struck twelve, and April 9th was over.
There was a lot of the two-tier cake left, the three elders didn't have big appetites, nor the habit of eating in the middle of the night, so they didn't eat much.
But ten minutes later, the five people in the room were sitting on the couch, staring at the two-tier cake, which went from two tiers to one.
Another ten minutes passed, the single tier of cake was halved.
Five more minutes and it was gone, all gone...
Egbert watched as Eileen ate the last bite of cake, he handed her a napkin, asking, "Is that enough?"
Eileen wiped her mouth, she leaned in, whispering to Egbert, "Listen up, I overspent on groceries to cook for you earlier, I didn't really have enough dinner!"
Didn't have enough? You seemed to have eaten a lot!
Josephine was a bit peeved at this point.
She glared at Egbert, thinking he was being stingy, and chided, "If Eileen likes to eat, just let her be. Being able to eat is a blessing. Eileen, don't mind him, are you full now? If you're full, let's open the presents!"
