Chapter 1500
Why would Caden do this?
"And then there's that recent case you handled. The client is suspected of laundering money for an international corporation, and these are the 'evidences' you submitted." The captain's brows furrowed as he pulled a file from the side, placing it in front of Ben. "Take a look at what you turned in."
The documents were full of evasive arguments, but the worst part was that a check had somehow been slipped between the pages. With all this evidence piled up against him, even as a lawyer, Ben had no way to prove his innocence.
He had no idea how things had come to this. He had personally organized and submitted these files to the court, but the ones on record were completely different. Someone had swapped them out. But who?
Ben handled everything himself, except for having his assistant print the documents. Could it be...?
"Mr. Lucas, the evidence is overwhelming. You'd better think about how to clear your name," the captain said, standing up and looking at Ben with a mix of disgust and disappointment.
This was a young, talented lawyer from a reputable family, with a bright future ahead. But here he was, ruining his own career. Bribery or betrayal, any one of these charges alone would be enough to end his career.
Mrs. Lucas quickly learned of Ben's detention. Her first instinct was to pull some strings to get him out, but as she came to understand the details of the case, she felt a deep chill. "How could it be this serious?"
"Mrs. Lucas, Lunderstand how you
feel, but this case is under my personal oversight. I can't just let him go, the captain told her. "You're an insightful person. You know how serious this is. Please, go home."
Mrs. Lucas barely remembered how she made it out of the station. Once she got into her car, she didn't go straight home. Instead, she drove to another location. There, a man in a mask waited for her.
"I wanted my son's law license revoked so he'd return home to take over the family business, but I didn't want him locked up! Do you not understand a single word I've said?
"Are you insane?" She stormed over as soon as she saw him.
"We had an agreement! You

promised me everything would go smoothly. I thought you were
reliable, but this is reckless. Now my son is in custody, and I expect you to get him out immediately."
The masked man turned to face her.
Even though the mask hid his features, Mrs. Lucas had a sinking feeling he was mocking her.
3.
"Mrs. Lucas, haven't you heard the saying, 'When you set a trap for others, be careful not to fall into one yourself? We're not family, so why would go out of my way to help you? I'm not running a charity."
"Then you should have turned me down from the start! Why go after my son? Why?" Her voice grew more frantic.
If this got out, Ben's career would be destroyed, and the Lucas family's reputation would be shattered. The company's image would tank, and their stock prices would inevitably take a hit.
