Chapter 117
Mrs. Clements's face was pale. Closing her wrinkled eyes, she did not speak but she looked very sickly.
Penny Carter turned around while wiping her tears with the back of her hand. Then, she went to inquire about the situation. When she knew that it was Alicia who signed the operation document, she looked enraged and started scolding her.
"How can you make such an important decision on your own? If something bad happens to Grandma, could you bear the responsibility?"
"Why didn't you call us?"
"If you couldn't get through to us, don't you know how to get someone to find us? Are you a dumb*ss?"
As soon as Carson walked in, he saw Penny forcing Alicia to a corner. Unexpectedly, Alicia lowered her head and did not say a word. He softly coughed twice in purpose.
"Ahem, please don't make noise in the hospital! The patient needs to rest!"
At this time, Mr. Clements had arrived with sweat falling from his forehead. He heard Penny's accusation but he disregarded it. Instead, he rushed to the bed and held his mother's hand straight away.
"Mom, are you feeling better now? I am such an unfilial son!"
Shaking her head slowly, Mrs. Clements muttered softly, "It's all right. It's so noisy. Can all of you leave? I just need Alicia and Miranda to accompany me..."
With that, all of them headed out as told. Alicia tucked in the fluffy quilt for Mrs. Clements and carefully adjusted the position of the infusion bottle before sitting beside the bed quietly.
At this time, Miranda nodded at Mrs. Clements with a satisfied smile.
"Ally, I'm so sorry that they have wronged you. Don't take it to heart. I know what you have done!" Mrs. Clements comforted Alicia.
"Grandma, I don't feel wronged. In fact, I'm fine! I know, Aunt is just worried about you. It's important for you to rest well and recover as soon as possible!'¹
There was not a trace of displeasure on Alicia's face. She even put on a smile.
At this time, her cell phone lit up suddenly. She said, "It's Frederick, Grandma, I—" © NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
She pointed at the door and was ready to head out. But, as soon as she got up, her hand was grabbed by someone.
"Don't tell him. I'm fine. I don't want him to worry... If something happens when he comes back in a hurry... Ahem..."
"Okay, okay! Grandma, don't worry, I won't tell him!"
After comforting Mrs. Clements, Alicia walked to the side with her phone and greeted, "Hubby!"
"What's the matter? Why did you call me?" There were countless missed calls on his phone. At this moment, Frederick sounded anxious and dissatisfied.
Alicia could sense it but her eyes subconsciously swept over the bed beside her. She could only make up an excuse instead.
"Nothing! I got scolded by my boss and I was feeling a little... upset!"
Hearing that she had called him so many times just because of this, Frederick was annoyed. He saw tons of missed calls from her when he turned on the phone. Hence, he had to come out with an excuse to get away momentarily from his customers in order to call her back.
"Next time, do not call me so many times for a matter like this! If you don't want to listen to his scolding, just cover your ears!"
"Okay!"
Although she felt very wronged and unhappy in her heart, Alicia chose to endure it. At this time, the sound of wheels could be heard. The door of the ward was opened, as a nurse with a medical cart entered.
Holding her phone in her hand, Alicia walked to a corner.
Just as she was about to hang up, a confused voice came from the other end, "Where are you? What is that noise?"
"Oh, my friend is ill. I'm in the hospital visiting her! The nurse is here to change the IV drip for her. All right, Hubby, I won't bother you anymore. Go back to work and I will end the call now!"
After hanging up the phone, Alicia gathered herself and returned to the side of the bed.
She had been thinking about the days when Frederick took care of her when she had appendicitis previously. She still remembered promising him that when he was busy, she would take good care of his grandmother for him. She also remembered him telling her that this business trip was very important.
Therefore, she could not tell him about what had happened to Mrs. Clements as she did not want it to affect his work. She just wished that Mrs. Clements would get well soon.
Alicia negotiated and made an arrangement with her superior at the company. Every day, she would head to the company to clock in first before taking her work to the hospital. If it was really something crucial, she would go to the company to deal with it.
For the next few days, Alicia would go back and forth between the company and the hospital daily. She would even sleep and finish all of her work in the hospital.
However, she felt hope when she noticed that Mrs. Clements was getting better day by day. Her complexion had gotten ruddy and she could even get out of bed. Alicia somehow had a sense of accomplishment. While taking care of Mrs. Clements, she secretly prayed that her father could get better as soon as possible, just like Mrs.
Clements.
One day, Alicia returned to the hospital after heading to the company. Then, she heard noises coming from the ward.
She took a few big steps and rushed over. When Alicia's hand was about to reach the doorknob, Hallie's and Penny's voice suddenly came from the room.
"Mom, this is specially cooked by Hallie! We are here to visit you!
"Grandma, have some..."
She halted her footsteps and suddenly leaned to one side to hide. She thought something had happened, but it turned out that it was just members of the Clements family. As she didn't want to cause a scene, she thought it'd be best if she stayed out of sight for time being.
However, Mrs. Clements could be heard scolding angrily at this moment.
"Go away! It's best if you don't come here to pester me! The porridge you give me every time is just too bland. I don't want to eat. I don't have the appetite! I told you I want to eat meat!"
"If you bring this to me one more time, don't bother coming anymore!"
"Mom, we are just worried about you. You can't eat greasy food for now as the doctor said. It's not good for your stomach. Besides, it might be lifethreatening! We're just concerned about you."
"Forcing me to eat this every single day is the same as wanting me to die! I said that I am fully recovered, yet I'm not allowed to get discharged and not allowed to eat whatever I want!"
Then, there was another quarrel in the ward. Alicia hesitated for a while as she didn't know if she should go in. At this time, Miranda's voice was heard.
"Madam, why don't you two head back first? Every time before and after a meal, Mrs. Clements will lose her temper. As you know, she has always been a food lover, but now she can't eat whatever she wants... Also, the doctor doesn't allow her to get angry. Her temper will be gone once there's no one around!"
Hearing this, Alicia turned around and went to the bathroom.
When she was back, there was no visitor in the ward anymore. "Grandma-"
"Ally, you are back!" Seeing Alicia, Mrs. Clements' tone was much hospitable. At this time, Miranda was carrying the vegetable porridge which was sent by the nutritionist and it had a faint aroma of meat.
"Grandma, you look better today! It's time to eat! You will feel better once you are full!"
As soon as Alicia scooped some porridge out, she heard Mrs. Clements's aggrieved voice, "I want to eat meat!"
"Grandma, the chef added some meat in the porriage today!"
No matter how delicious the food was, everyone would feel sick eating the same thing every day. Not to mention, it was a tasteless porridge. After all, Alicia had just been hospitalized, thus she understood very well. Sometimes, she would not have the appetite to eat even if she was starving.
