Chapter 17
Makayla, come in here for a minute.” Eric Carter said.
Makayla gulped as she felt her heart rate rising up a notch. She had no idea why her boss needed her attention but all she knew was that it couldn’t be good.
There was no reason for him to require her attention. She had done all he asked her to do that morning and even the ones for the following morning.
“Yes sir.” Makayla said.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart down but try as she may, it wasn’t helping. She was agitated and the only way her heart could be back to normal was when she was done with him.
Makayla had noticed the way his sleazy eyes followed her about which was something she wasn’t comfortable with. It seemed there was an hidden intention within him, born out of the desire to harm her but in what way, she had no idea.
Jason’s words the previous day filtered through her mind and she knew there was something more to what he was saying. She couldn’t quite place her finger on what it was but whatever it is, she knew she had to follow his warnings.
Makayla walked towards the door, knocking lightly before pushing it open. Eric sat on his desk, lightly tapping his pen on the table. In all her life, Makayla had never seen someone as arrogant as he was. He was full of himself, very proud and talked to people anyhow he deemed fit.
The main reason why she was doing this job was to have something to fall back on. She couldn’t be depending on her mother or Jason for money. She needed to work for something hence her applying for the job.
Jason had told her times without number that he could adequately take care of her but Makayla didn’t want that. She needed to work for her own stuffs.
“Sir, you called?” She said.
She smoothed her skirt, looking down at her ope toes heels before looking back up at him. Already, he had his eyes on her and Makayla knew that there was definitely something going on with him.
“The reports I asked you to fill, are you done with it?”
Makayla couldn’t believe that this was the reason he had called. She had filled reports yesterday and even emailed it to him but apparently, his dumb brain forgot.
“Yes sir, I did that since yesterday and even sent it to your mail. Didn’t you receive it?” Makayla snapped.
She couldn’t take the bite out of her tongue. Eric was slowly frustrating her but she knew she had to be patient if she didn’t want to loose her job.
“What kind of time is that?” He asked.
“I’m sorry sir.” Makayla breathed.
He stared at her with a smirk on his face. She didn’t know what he was after but all she knew was that she had to be really careful. He had already shown the signs and she wouldn’t be caught unawares in case he wanted to try anything funny.
“Good. Would you be free this weekend?” He asked.
Makayla was taken aback by this question. She mentally checked if they had any meeting they were to attend together but nothing came up.
“No Sir.” She said.
She decided to lie, if he had any intentions of asking her out, she effortlessly blocked it. She wasn’t going to be in the same room or restaurant with him.
“I see.” He said.All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
He remained quiet for a while, giving her a once over before dismissing her. Makayla left, slamming the door lightly to show her annoyance. She couldn’t quite believe he had wasted her time, asking frivolous things. They were things that made no sense at all.
“Damn you Eric.” Makayla said.
Just then, her phone beeped, indicating she had a call. Glancing at the caller ID, she discovered it was from Jason. She smiled because her boyfriend just had a way of cheering her up. This was the moment she really needed him and he was here.
“Hey baby.” Makayla smiled.
“Darling, how are you?” Jason asked.
There was a bit of noise there and Makayla knew he was either at the gym or his base.
“I’m fine but I miss you, badly.” She sighed.
“Just imagine I’m there, that’s all you need to do.” He said.
“I’ll try. Where are you? It’s so noisy there.” Makayla said.
A new mail had just come in for the company and she knew she had to get on with it before Mr bossy pants had a reason to query her. From the look of the mail, Makayla had a feeling it was important based on the tag “IMPORTANT”.
“Babe, I’ll call you back soon. I need to get on with something.” Makayla said.
“Okay love, is everything alright?” Jason asked.
“Yes, just got a company mail. I need to attend to it ASAP.” She said.
“Okay, talk to you later love. Love you.” Jason said before cutting the call.
Makayla placed her phone on the table, clicking through the mail on tht computer. It was from an investor and a major one at that. He requested the presence of Eric and a few of his staffs for a banquet he was hosting this weekend.
“Banquet? Huh it can’t be what I’m thinking.” Makayla said.
Looking through the mail, she discovered that it was to hold this weekend. She was having a funny feeling about all of this and she really hoped it didn’t turn out to what she thought it would be.
She forwarded the mail to Eric’s email, waiting for his call that was sure to come. Sure enough, few minutes later, he summoned her in.
“I understand there’s a banquet we’re to attend this weekend.” He said, waving the paper at her.
“Yes sir, the mail just arrived. It’s this weekend at the Radisson building.” Makayla said.
“I see. Like I said before Makayla, I hope you wouldn’t be busy on that day because you’ll be accompanying me to the event.” He said.
Makayla stared at him, wishing it was a joke but it wasn’t as his eyes took on a look of mischief.
